Sherwood Brewing Company will celebrate 10 years of craft beer with a special “Abbeyversary” event on Aug. 20. Starting at 4 p.m. and throughout the evening, there will be several special releases of Sherwood’s “Abbey” ales.

The event is actually two parties in one. The 5th Annual WoodFest will be going on in the main tent in conjunction with the Abbeyversary. WoodFest is a celebration of the local relationships Sherwood Brewing has developed over the years. Local food, musicians, and vendors will also be on hand.

Sherwood Brewing Company, or “The Wood” to the regulars, has been brewing and selling their “obnoxiously unpretentious beers” since Aug. 31, 2006. They also serve locally sourced “elevated pub grub.”

Owners Ray Sherwood, Lisa Sherwood, and Corey Paul are more laid back about things than other breweries. The focus has always been on local relationships and experiencing life.

“The anniversary party is a celebration of how we do things; it’s about having fun and enjoying good food. It’s not about pushing a bottle in front of collectors,” says Ray.

“We’ve spent the past 10 years making and strengthening our connections to the community,” says Lisa. “Whether it’s fundraising for a local cause, networking to support local businesses, or donating to school and community events, Sherwood Brewing Company is instrumental in helping others.”

One example of their community involvement is the annual Presents for Pints. Each holiday season, customers trade wishes (gifts) for beer and pizza, and local children benefit.

“We choose a charity each November and gather their wish list,” Lisa says. “Last year we adopted 25 kids from Friends of Foster Kids and were able to obtain every item on every wish list. Our customers look forward to P4P every year.”

Let the Festival Begin!

The Abbeyversary celebration will be run like a mini-beer festival, with unique beers at multiple stations in a large tent.

The party will kick off at 4 p.m. with the release of Sherwood’s Abbey10 Ale. This high-octane Belgian Abbey ale and other Sherwood favorites will be available in the main tent and pub.

A special champagne bottle release of 2015 Abbeyversary Ale aged in a Two James gin barrel will begin at 5 p.m. and lasts until supplies run out. A wax-sealed champagne bottle release of Big Fitz Scotch Wee Heavy (aged in a Dickel whiskey barrel) will also be available for purchase. Limited quantities are available for each release; no presales or holds will be available.

A firkin tapping of the cask-conditioned Abbey10 follows at 5:30 p.m.

A gin-barrel-aged version of Belgian Abbeyversary 2015 rounds out the special releases at 7 p.m.

Other festival beers include: Buxom BlonDDe, Mistress Jades Hemp Ale, Lawnmower IPA, Disco Lemonade, Entire Buzz Honey Porter, Little Mitt- Michigan grown hoppy amber, Cocoa Mint Stout, Kiwi Lime Ale, 2015 Barrel Aged Isham IPA, 2015 Barrel Aged Smoked Pumpkin Porter, Lemongrass Saison, Thai Chi Ale, Agua Fresca Watermelon Mint Lime Ale, Cukuler Explosion, and Kale Ale.

Local vendors on hand to join in the celebration and promote the community spirit include Backwoods Mustard Company, Cap ‘N’ Cork Homebrew Supply, Growing Green Gardens, Jayell Smokehouse, MES Designs, Metro Detroit Screen Printing, and Wolf Pack Discs.

Sherwood’s kitchen will be cooking for the event. There will also be dishes from the Jayell Smokehouse and a station serving a variety of beer-infused gelato.

A special Brew in a Bag demonstration begins at 4 p.m. with Andy Moore of Cap ‘N’ Cork Homebrew Supply. A limited edition Abbey 10 brewing kit featuring Motor City Malt and hops from Goodrich’s Top Hop Farms is the featured beer.

Live music runs from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. with Alan Cayne, A Man Named Hooper, The Brothers Mogan, and Grape Jam.

Tickets are $35 and include 6 6-ounce samples, a 16-ounce Silipint (silicone pint glass), an Abbeyversary Drawstring Bag, and other swag. $10 Designated Driver tickets are available and include the Abbeyversary Drawstring Bag, 2 non-alcoholic beverages, and other swag.

Tickets are in limited supply and can be purchased online HERE, or at the brewery while supplies last.
