💙 **TODAY IS NATIONAL NONPROFIT DAY!** 💙
Why do nonprofits exist—and why do they matter?
Because there are needs in our communities that government programs and private businesses simply don’t fully reach. Some needs are too local, too specific, or too easily overlooked.
**That’s where nonprofits step in. And it’s exactly why Friends of Foster Kids exists.**
For a child entering foster care, being removed from an unsafe situation is only the beginning. A safer place to live doesn’t automatically provide the clothing, shoes, hygiene products and other everyday necessities they may have left behind.
And beyond those basics, there’s something else every child needs:
**To know they matter.
To know someone cares.
To know they haven’t been forgotten.**
FOFK works to help fill those gaps—from emergency necessities and our Christmas program to supporting young people preparing to age out of foster care. We now cover referred foster youth in Wayne, Oakland Macomb and Washtenaw counties. This number easily reaches into the thousands.
National Nonprofit Day, observed each year on **August 17**, recognizes the tremendous work nonprofits do in communities across the country. The date also has historical roots in the Tariff Act of 1894, an early milestone in the federal treatment of charitable organizations.
Nonprofits may bring in more revenue than they spend, but unlike a traditional business, those funds don’t go to owners or shareholders. They are reinvested into the organization’s mission and programs.
💙 **So how can you celebrate National Nonprofit Day and help FOFK?**
1️⃣ **Make a donation.** Every amount makes a difference. During August, you can support FOFK through the **Rocket Community Challenge**. l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rocketcommunitychallenge.com%2Forganization%2FFriends-Of...
OR....You can also donate anytime through our website at www.friendsoffosterkids.org
2️⃣ **Volunteer.** Our Christmas program gets into full swing in October, and we’ll need lots of helping hands to wrap and prepare gifts.
3️⃣ **Sponsor a foster child for Christmas.** Help make sure a child knows someone thought specifically about *them* this holiday season.
4️⃣ **Share our mission.** It costs nothing to share a post, tell a friend about FOFK, or invite someone to follow our page—and it helps more people learn about the foster youth we serve.
Nonprofits are often doing the quiet, unglamorous work that might otherwise go undone.
Today, we celebrate every nonprofit, every volunteer, every donor and every supporter who sees a need and decides to do something about it.**
Thank you for helping **Friends of Foster Kids** continue to fill the gaps and remind foster youth that they matter. 💙

Today, we’re sharing the life experiences of one of our foster youth who is graduating out of foster care.
Her story is difficult to read. But as you read her words, imagine how difficult it was to **live through it**.
No child should have to experience the things she describes. We are grateful there is a foster care system in place to step in when children need safety, stability and protection—but we also know these young people often need so much more.
**THIS is why Friends of Foster Kids exists.**
We want foster youth to know that they DO matter. They ARE cared about. And they are not forgotten.
Through our Hats Off to Grads program, a wonderful sponsor stepped up and provided the necessities and special items this young woman needed as she prepared for life after foster care. We were honored to be a small part of helping her begin this next chapter.
And when she picked up her gifts, we made sure she knew something else:
**FOFK is still here.**
Graduating out of foster care doesn't mean our support has to end. If she needs help in the future, she knows she can reach out to us.
Please take a moment to read her story in her own words. It helps explain better than we ever could **why this mission matters.** 💙
And Thank you to all who help us help them!
